Overnight Trips Near Auckland

This is suppose to just help with trip planning, it is brief and incomplete list but will help you with planning.
I have done it by region and have not included the Kaimais cause they are awesome and probably deserve there own section. Ditto Waitakeres.
These are not official DoC overnight trips but things I have considered possible from studying maps and may involve camping at non-DoC campsites

Northland
Tangihua Forest
Where: Halfway between Dargaville and Whangarei (2hrs from AK)
Accomodation: 9 Bunk Tangihua Hut
Whats there:Podocarp forest, Kauri Dams, Ridge tracks
Length: 9 hours of walking

Cape Brett
Where: Bay of Islands (4hrs drive)
Accomodation: Cape Brett hut
Whats There: Beaches, Bush, Lighthouses
Length: 8 hrs one way

Waima Forest
Where: Opononi (3.5hrs north)
Accomodation: Bush Camping
Whats There: Rare plants, views, historic coach road, Kauri, Waterfalls
Length: Various options, tracks rough in places

Brenderwyn Ranges
Where: 2hrs north
A overnight trip could be made with a bit of imagination in these ranges too
