Kaimai-Mamuku FP
New bridges at crossings 3 and 4 on the Waitawheta track in the Kaimais are now open. This means there are only three river crossings now remaining. A new track behind Waitawheta Hut is being cut up to Te Aroha.
The old north south track which runs from Pukekohatu to Wahine rock via Pahiko and the section from this track down to Cashmore's clearing has not been maintened for several years. When last visted (07) the last portion of this track from Wahine rock to Te Rereatukahia had been recently marked with orange arrows.
There use to be a hut near Pukekohatu (T13 546 052) called Te Aroha Mountain hut, this has since been removed and the only camping available hear is on the old concrete slab foundations. There is no water so this is not recommended.
On older maps there is a hut marked at T13 613 068 in the Waitengaue stream valley, This hut was burnt down many years ago though there is still camping available at the site.
Also on older maps Waitewheta hut is shown at T13 537 055 near the confluence of the Waitewheta and Waipapa streams. The hut has been rebuilt and moved to the "old mill site" at T13 583 047, near the junction with the track that comes in from the Waitengaue. Camping is still possible at the old site and a toilet has been built there.
It is not considered to be safe to leave your car overnight at the end of Waiorongomai road, several cars have been burnt down here in the past.
That will do for now I will be back later with how to get to the plane crash and where many of the unmarked huts are. (unless someone beats me to it)
